BEIJING, Aug 10 (Reuters) - China, one of the favourites for the gold medal, failed to qualify for the women's gymnastics team final at the Olympics on Sunday.

The 2006 world champions were expected to battle it out with the United States for the top prize but a series of errors meant they failed to reach Wednesday's final.

The Reuters Beijing Olympics reporting team erroneously issued an English-language story dated August 10 saying that the Chinese women's gymnastics team failed to qualify for the finals. We withdrew the story 10 minutes after it ran on the Reuters wire. cn.reuters.com, our Chinese language Web site, didn't run the story. But due to an technical error with our US site, www.reuters.com, the story remained on the site for several days, and caused confusion among our readers.
